Paying For Health Care Overhaul May Fall Unevenly On States
"Some of the "bluest" states that propelled Obama into the White House are among those most likely to pay more in taxes to fund expanded health insurance coverage and make other changes to the system, analysts say," The Los Angeles Times reports. "People in states such as Illinois, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York have a higher share of wealthier taxpayers and residents who get generous healthcare plans through work -- and both sets of people may be tapped to raise money for the healthcare overhaul. Moreover, those states have less to gain from a national effort to expand health insurance coverage because their residents already are more likely to have insurance than are Americans as a whole. Those conclusions by a range of policy analysts may point to future tension in the healthcare debate: Though battle lines so far have been drawn largely in partisan terms, lurking regional divisions could fracture Congress even further."

Smoking In Military Populations, VA Medical Centers: DOD, VA, Congress Should Take Stronger Steps Toward Eliminating Tobacco Use
Because tobacco use impairs military readiness, harms the health of soldiers and veterans, and imposes a substantial financial burden on the departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs, these agencies should implement a comprehensive strategy to achieve the Defense Department"s stated goal of a tobacco-free military, says a new report from the Institute of Medicine. DOD should gradually phase in a ban on tobacco use in the military, starting at military academies and officer training programs and among new recruits, the report says. DOD should also stop selling tobacco products in Army and Air Force commissaries -- Navy and Marine Corps commissaries already do not sell them -- and should stop selling them at a discount in military exchanges and other stores. In addition, Congress should allow VA to establish tobacco-free medical centers.

According to the blog, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and Catholic Charities USA sent out an action alert saying, ""We must maintain momentum for health care reform efforts with calls and e-mails supporting health care reform immediately. ... Your members of Congress need to hear from you that you support health care reform, and that the system needs to be reformed now."" The Catholic Health Association also put together a YouTube video showing people displaying messages such as "I can"t wait for health care reform" and, "We can"t wait until the signing ceremony." Judie Brown, president of American Life League, said, "All these organizations claim to be faithful to Catholic social teaching -- which unambiguously and passionately puts respect for human personhood at the core of all other social and charitable works," but "these same organizations are undermining the very foundation they exist to protect and foster: the dignity of human persons and the sanctity of their right to life" (ProLife Blogs, 7/29).
