Medicare Analysis Finds Too Many Needless Deaths At Hospitals
A new Medicare analysis by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services found a "double failure" at U.S. hospitals. Its release comes as the White House and Congress seek ways to reward quality over quantity of care in health care reform. USA Today reports that "Too many people die needlessly at U.S. hospitals, according to a sweeping new Medicare analysis showing wide variation in death rates between the best hospitals and the worst. The analysis examined death rates for heart attacks, heart failure and pneumonia at more than 4,600 hospitals across the USA. At 5.9% of hospitals, patients with pneumonia died at rates significantly higher than the national average. With heart failure, 3.4% of hospitals had death rates higher than the average, and 1.2% of hospitals were higher when it came to heart attack. Researchers also found that the majority of U.S. hospitals operate the equivalent of revolving doors for their patients. One of every four heart failure patients and slightly less than one in five heart attack and pneumonia patients land back in the hospital within 30 days, data show."

Common Cancer Drug May Increase Risk Of Deadly GI Perforations
Cancer patients treated with the widely used drug bevacizumab (Avastin) in combination with chemotherapy are at greater risk of life-thereatening gastrointestinal (GI) perforations. This is the conclusion of Shenhong Wu, M.D., Ph.D., Principal Investigator, and colleagues at Stony Brook University Medical Center, in a study published online and in the June print issue of The Lancet Oncology.

Halozyme Begins Phase 2 Clinical Trial Of Insulin-PH20 In Type 2 Diabetic Patients
Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq:HALO) today announced the commencement of patient dosing in a Phase 2 clinical study of Insulin-PH20 in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. This randomized cross-over design study is designed to compare the postprandial glycemic excursions following a standardized test meal after treatment with either insulin lispro+PH20 or regular insulin+PH20 relative to treatment with lispro (Humalog) alone.

All Party Parliamentary Group For Parkinson's Disease Announces Report & Parkinson's Disease Society Launches Fair Care For Parkinson's

In response to the report, the Parkinson"s Disease Society will also launch Fair Care for Parkinson"s, calling for the Government to ensure the APPG report recommendations are carried out. Nearly 400 individuals and organisations including national and local health and social care providers, regulators, professional bodies and charities, provided written and oral evidence to the inquiry.
